At a recent Northern Swag outing, the conversation turned to post assignments. Cora came over and whispered in my ear, “If you help me Mama, I’ll write one.” And what better topic than ice cream for this little gal? Stay tuned for more from Cora on her favorite ice cream shops. It is one hot summer and she is one persistent ice cream fan!

We rode our bikes to The Filling Station the other day, which is a new restaurant in TC. We sat outside and played Frisbee and there was live music by Mike Moran. I really liked his music a lot, and my mom and I danced together to one of his songs. I also got to meet him, which was
really cool. When it got darker the lights hanging overhead shone brightly and it was an inviting
atmosphere.
I ordered locally made pomegranate lemonade mixed with soda water. It was a very bright, bold pink colored drink, with a lot of small fizzing bubbles. The pomegranate lemonade was kind of fun to drink, and I could feel the little bubbles popping on my tongue when I took a sip. It was very refreshing, especially on this summer night. For dinner I got the Burlington Northern pizza, which had garlic oil, roasted garlic cloves, red onions, pear, prosciutto, brie, parmesan, and was topped with a balsamic reduction. I really liked this pizza, especially the pears, which made it different from other pizzas I’ve had. My brother got The Overnighter. It had garlic oil, sesame seeds, herbs, parmesan, and mozzarella. I tried a slice of his too and it was very tasty.
For dessert we had the S’mores Caboose pizza. It had Nutella, graham cracker crumbs, marshmallows, and was drizzled with caramel and chocolate. It was very rich and tasted like I was eating a real s’more!
The whole Northern Swag team was there at the Filling Station. Overall, the night was very enjoyable and I definitely want to come back here soon.

I like Brew. A lot. First, I’ve never been subject to as many cheerful greetings anywhere else. That goes a long way with me and the staff seem to be universally friendly. The food and drink options are solid, with an emphasis on local libations. And the atmosphere is perfect for somebody as hip old as I am, even in the evenings when they serve more beer than coffee. It also feels very…European I guess, to serve beer in a coffeehouse. And feeling like you’re in Europe without having to deal with effete Euro-trash is always a bonus. The coffee is Higher Grounds and despite working above a coffee shop, I gladly walk down the street to get my black gold from Brew. There’s a decent offering of vegetarian dishes so that your PETA-card-carrying friends can come too. They also routinely have live music and the french toast and mimosas served up on Sunday mornings are definitely worth stopping in for. Since they serve everything that my diet consists of: coffee, beer, and sandwiches (tacos on Thursday nights!!), this is one of my go-to spots downtown, especially if I’m pinched for time.

Cherry Festival will be kicking off in just over a week. Inspired by an entry at Food52, we tried our own do-it-yourself cherry pitter to much delight. Of course emptying our cherry pit depository (Short’s Nicie Spicie) also resulted in its own sort of delight.
Items required:
- local cherries
- empty bottle
- small straight stick
- hungry bellies
Instructions:
- Place the cherry atop the empty bottle.
- While holding the cherry, push the stick through the center allowing the pit to fall into the bottle.
- Pop pit-free cherry into mouth.
- Enjoy.
- Repeat.
