Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

Right down the street from where I lived as a young child is a trail entrance to the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. Four miles of what will eventually be 27 miles of paved trail connecting Good Harbor to south of Empire is now open. Although controversial with the locals (“sharing with others” apparently a difficult kindergarten subject for us all), it’s hard not to admit that the path is pretty amazing in its beauty (running through what has been undisturbed forest for years) and in where it leads (connecting some of the most beautiful natural spots the area has to offer).

We set off on the path towards Glen Haven the evening of July 4th, after a full day of catching candy at the Glen Arbor parade and swimming in Glen Lake. My daughter, Cora, loved being able to ride without worrying about sharing the road with cars (a concern she has developed through our weekly car-free Tuesday, during which we get around via bike, mostly in the heart of Traverse City).

Day parade in Glen Arbor is a great small-town event for spectators and participants alike. The parade rolls/walks/bikes into Glen Arbor from Glen Haven around noon (grab a seat along the main drag either on M22 or M109). For those with more ambition than catching a few pieces of candy, all that is required to be in the parade is a little creativity and some red white and blue (no entry forms or fees required). The entrants line up at Glen Haven starting at 11:00 a.m. If your preferred role is spectator, be sure to bring your best catching mitt. This year’s “floats” were not only tossing candy, to the delight of the children, but magazines, hot dogs, dental floss, and even toilet paper rolls courtesy of local Decker’s Pumping Service who had their pumping truck pulling up the rear of the parade.

In Anticipation of Cherry Festival

Cherry Festival will be kicking off in just over a week. Inspired by an entry at Food52, we tried our own do-it-yourself cherry pitter to much delight. Of course emptying our cherry pit depository (Short’s Nicie Spicie) also resulted in its own sort of delight.

Items required:

local cherries
empty bottle
small straight stick
hungry bellies

Instructions:

Place the cherry atop the empty bottle.
While holding the cherry, push the stick through the center allowing the pit to fall into the bottle.
Pop pit-free cherry into mouth.
Enjoy.
Repeat.
