I’ve been eagerly awaiting the opening of Om Cafe for a few weeks as it’s located a couple short blocks from my office (where The Loading Dock Bar was) & I’ve heard great things about their Ferndale location. So when I discovered that the tape had been cut I walked down for lunch. I’m a failed vegetarian (I love pork too much!) and a person who associates with vegetarians, so I was really hopeful that Om would be a new spot to find some good grub. They do offer a few fish dishes so if you have a friend who is strictly carnivorous, they can still come.
There was no wait so we were seated immediately. In fact, the place was pretty empty, which raised some concerns. I chalked it up to having only been open about a week. However, about halfway through our meal it started filling up, although with a somewhat elderly-looking crowd. Not really sure what that was all about, maybe a scenic tour bus dropped them off.
I declined our server’s offer of some “organic” lemonade as I prefer my lemonade riddled with pesticides. The menu offerings were definitely on the light & healthy side. Kim ordered the Spring Rolls, which I think provided around 10 calories. We were able to get back to the office and get her a bowl of cereal before she passed out from hypoglycemia. Probably a good place to eat if you suffer from diabeetus.
The menu is actually very creative. I had the Quinoa Protein Salad and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the service was attentive. Overall, not a bad place for lunch and I’ll probably head back in the near future.

Tuesday, August 7th is election day. That’s today if I get this post done in time. Otherwise it was yesterday and hopefully you voted. I’ve found that there isn’t a great resource for what’s going to be on the ballots in the local elections, but no worries, Northern Swag is here for you. Below is a run down of the candidates for Grand Traverse County with my comments in italics. I omitted the township elections because there were too many and I don’t even know what township I live in. We just call it the east-side ghetto. Trust me, it’s fitting.
